To usher in the New Year, the City Government has prepared a grand celebration highlighted by the countdown and fireworks display midnight tonight at Paseo del Mar.
Now on its fourth year, the grand activity will start as early as 7pm with live band performances and other surprises.

“We invite everyone to join us in the New Year countdown and grand fireworks display to usher in and welcome 2013”, Lobregat said as he concluded his speech during the 116th Rizal Day celebration early yesterday morning at the Rizal monument fronting City Hall.

For the past three years, thousands of people converge at the scenic Paseo del Mar on New Year’s Eve to witness the spectacular fireworks show staged by the City Government, kicking off the New Year celebration in Zamboanga.

The fireworks display is preceded by the countdown led personally by Mayor Lobregat.

Revellers queue the park as early as 5pm on December 31 to secure vantage points for the anticipated fireworks show.

Last year, the fireworks display was sponsored by generous individuals as the City Government called off its sponsorship in sympathy to the victims of tropical storm Sendong in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and other parts of the country.

The city government donated then P1million each to the local governments of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and also assisted through relief goods in close coordination with Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Tzu Chi Foundation and other groups.

This year, the City Government donated P2 million for victims of super typhoon Pablo that hit Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental. — Sheila Covarrubias
