The female disbursing officer of a microfinance company and the driver of a habal-habal motorcycle that was taking her to Ayala from the highland of La Paz, west of Zamboanga City were shot dead by holduppers at Zone 8, Ayala before noon yesterday.

One of the two holduppers was arrested during a follow-up operation carried out by the Ayala police led by Supt. Hado Edding.

Killed were Pia Landingin of Mempco microfinance firm and Jorge Bernardo, a habal-habal driver of La Paz.

Edding said that Landingin was carrying some P50,000 which she took from their sub-office in La Paz to be brought to the Mempco office in Ayala aboard Bernardo's habal-habal. At Zone 8, two men flagged them down and without much ado shot them at close range.

The gunmen grabbed Landingin's bag containing the money and sped towards La Paz aboard another motorcycle.

Bernardo was rushed to the Zamboanga City Medical Center where he was declared dead on arrival while Landingin expired as doctors were trying to save her from a gunshot wound in the head at the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga.

Edding said he and his men went on a hot pursuit operation resulting in the arrest of Reynaldo  Esteves, who was said to be driving the getaway motorcycle driver.

He added that it was Esteves who drove Landingin earlier to La Paz where she was to take the P50,000 and bring it to Mempco's office in Ayala.

Edding added that his men were still running after the gunman companion of Esteves. -- Dan Toribio Jr.
