Mayor Celso Lobregat and House Deputy Speaker and District I Representative Beng Climaco and District 2 Representative Erbie A. Fabian yesterday afternoon spearheaded the observance of the 9th death anniversary of Mayor Maria Clara “Ma’am Caling” Lobregat in Pasonanca.

The commemoration kicked off with a mass at the Holy Trinity Church in Pasonanca followed by the wreath laying rite and program at the Jardin Maria Clara.

Ma’am Caling, the city’s 19th and only woman chief executive, passed away in a Manila hospital last January 2, 2004 due to cardiac arrest. She was 82. Thousands of people from far and wide mourned and grieved her loss.

Zamboangueños representing various sectors attended the commemoration yesterday and paid tribute to Ma’am Caling touted as the most endearing person to be the mayor of Zamboanga.

Cong. Climaco, god daughter of the late mayor, extolled the contributions of Ma’am Caling to Zamboanga in her message.

In his response, Mayor Celso Lobregat, Ma’am Caling’s eldest son thanked Zamboangueños profusely for their undying love and admiration to his mother. He vowed to continue the visions of his mother for the good and interest of Zamboanga City.

The commemorative program was highlighted by the tribute song—which included favourite musical pieces of the late mayor, by the internationally-acclaimed Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale.

Also present during the commemoration were members of the City Council, department heads, regional directors and representatives of national and local government agencies, barangay officials and other sectoral representatives. — Sheila Covarrubias
