Zamboanga Peninsula celebrated the coming of a new year with a generally peaceful situation.

Police Regional Office 9 reported that in their over-all monitoring of the entire region, there was no untoward or major incident which took place during the last day of 2012 and on the first day of 2013.

Newly-assumed PRO-9 Director Chief Supt. Juanito Vaño,Jr. said he was glad with the report considering the volatility of the peace and order condition in the region.
Vaño said everyone — civilian and authorities-  contributed to the peaceful entry of the yearof the water snake.

The PNP in the entire region implemented strict security measures wherein all policemen were deployed in the field including those office personnel which resulted to increased visibility of law enforcers on the street.

Vaño said the peaceful celebration of the New Year can be attributed to the people, all law enforcement agencies like the PNP and the military and the force multipliers in the region.

He said the civilian populace cooperated with their security efforts and the PNP’s “Oplan Iwas Paputok 2013”.

The new police regional chief had directed officers on the ground to strictly monitor and inspect the issued firearms of all police personnel whose muzzled were sealed prior to the entry of 2013.

Police officers had a standing order to see to it that no policeman would violate the “no firing of guns” policy of the PNP every new year, and to impose sanctions on those who will be found to have violated this prohibition.

Yesterday, Vaño convened his top officials in PRO-9 to make a general assessment of the security measures as well as to listen to reports of provincial and city directors with regard to their operations and activities during New Year’s Eve.

It was also the first day of work for Gen. Vaño in his office after replacing Director Napoleon Estilles who was elevated to higher position as Directorate for Plans in Camp Crame last month. – Bhong Simbajon
