Participants and contestants to this year’s Ronda Pilipinas, a nationwide cycling race, will parade the city’s streets in a fun ride set this afternoon in preparation for the big race, tomorrow.

Mayor Celso Lobregat is ecstatic that the for the first time in the history of cycling, Zamboanga City was chosen as the kick off point of the national bike race dubbed “Ronda Pilipinas” organized by the LBC Pilipinas Inc. in partnership with Total Philippines and MVP Sports Foundation.

The fun ride will start at 4pm at Paseo del Mar passing to Climaco Avenue all the way to Pasonanca down to Tumaga and back to Paseo del Mar passing through Veterans Avenue. The activity will be capped with the presentation of the 12 participating teams composed of 96 bikers from all over Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and Ronda Pilipinas crew to the media.

“We invite everybody to be at the Paseo del Mar on Friday (tomorrow, January 11) at 4pm for the fun ride and presentation of participants and on Saturday (January 12) at 8am for the race proper that will kick off at the Paseo”, Lobregat said.

He sought the support of barangay chairmen and concerned agencies to support and help cooperate for the success of the activity.

The mayor said Ronda Pilipinas will definitely put Zamboanga not only in the sports map and if this will be highly publicized and advertised will be good for Zamboanga City.

Now on its third year, the cycling race will be a 21-day, 16-state challenge covering 2,200 kilometers of 32 cities and towns in Mindanao, Luzon and Visayas starting Jan. 12 in Zamboanga City ending in Baguio, February 1.

Joaquin Yabut, race administration director said primary aim of the event is continue the pursuit of providing a strong base for the improvement of the sport and the Filipino cyclist to be back on the highest possible level in Asia as a platform for competing with the best of the world and firmly establish corporate and sporting partnership with the corporate sector led by the country’s courier of choice—LBC and other sponsors.

Equally important objective of Ronda Pilipinas is to promote the different areas of the Philippines, in this case Zamboanga—through sports tourism.
