“Many will be hungry and starving if illegal swertres and other gambling operations will be stopped in the region and most affected are children of bet collectors and coordinators."

Thus said a government employee and a regular swertres bettor of Zamboanga del Norte, reacting to move by government authorities to crackdown on all forms of gambling and numbers games.

He said that most people in the region who do not have regular job depend on gambling operations like swertres as means to sustain their families. They either work as coordinator, collector, rider and similar odd jobs given by gambling capitalists.

Gambling operations, especially illegal swertres are widespread in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Sibugay and Zamboanga City.

He said if the numbers games will stop, many children will be afftected especially their food sustenance  and education.

He added that authorities can stop the numbers games,  but it will last for only two or three days.

It was learned that many gambling capitalists operate "guerrilla" type to gain bigger profit.

He revealed that under normal operations, capitalists have to allocate weekly or monthly operational funds for law enforcers who are in their pockets.

"Under guerrilla type, they (capitalists) avoid paying the law enforcers and come out with bigger profit," he explained.

He also said that in some areas in the region, capitalists and operators are politicians. --  Allen Abastillas
