Seventeen days after school teacher Flordeliza Ongchua was released by kidnappers in Jolo, Sulu, another prominent resident from the west coast was seized by gunmen in Barangay Maasin Friday night.

Maasin Barangay Chairman Misael “Doglo” Bernardo reported to the police that Edgar Fabella y Mortera, 43, married, was seized by six gunmen shortly before 7 p.m.

Fabella’s son Zandie told the police that around 6:40 p.m. he was tending their fastfood cum merchandise store while his father was standing outside the gate of their house.

Zandie said that before the incident, three men entered their store and bought cigarettes. Then they went out and moments later Zandie heard a commotion outside their house. He rushed out to check and saw his father lying on the ground. At this point, Zandie tried to help his father and punched one of the men but they poked their guns on him.

Zandie ran inside their house and sought for assistance from relatives. Seconds past, Zandie saw the gunmen and his father already aboard a pumpboat being operated
by another cohort along the shore. Then they sped away.

Report said that two unidentified men believed to be the “lookout” hurriedly boarded a motorcycle that sped towards the city proper.

Witnesses said that three men were speaking in tausug.

Ongchua, a teacher of the Labuan elementary school, was seized at their residence in Labuan on November last year and was released in Jolo, Sulu on December 24 around 9 a.m. – Dan Toribio Jr.
