The security escort of a local politician was nabbed at a police checkpoint in Boalan 21 hours after a nationwide Comelec gunban took effect last Sunday,

City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin De Ocampo identified the Comelec gunban violator as Sabandro Manuel y Librano, 42, married.

De Ocampo said that policemen of the Divisoria Police Station were manning a checkpoint at the Police Action Center around 9:15 p.m. when Manuel aboard a motorcycle was stopped for inspection.

Policemen discovered on Manuel’s possession a Beretta 9mm pistol with a magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.

De Ocampo said Manuel presented to the police team a permit-to-carry document and firearm’s license but he could not produce a Comelec gun ban exemption.

Manuel was detained at the Divisoria Police Station while the gun was turned over to an investigator for the filing of violation of Omnibus Election Code.

A police report showed that Manuel is the first violator arrested in Zamboanga City after the nationwide gun ban took effect on Sunday.

De Ocampo said they will not hesitate to enforce the Comelec law on everybody — civilians or men in uniform and appropriate charges will be filed against the violators. – Dan  Toribio Jr.
