President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III Wednesday afternoon exchanged notes with the Liberal Party-Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Adelante Zamboanga party coalition in a private meeting exclusively for the 2013 slate in Zamboanga.

The meeting was held at the president’s suite at the Garden Orchid Hotel immediately after his speaking engagement with heads of Mindanao Higher Educational Institutions in the forum “Schools Serving Society: Top Level Agenda of Higher Educational Institutions for Mindanao Peace and Development” organized by the Ateneo de Zamboanga University at the Badjao room.

The gathering with the local coalition headed by mayoralty aspirant Cong. Beng Climaco (LP),  congressional aspirants Mayor Celso Lobregat (LDP) for District 1 and Jomar Lobregat (AZP) and Vice Mayoralty aspirant Cesar Iturralde, was considered a defining moment for the LP-LDP-Adelante party, the team to beat in the May 2013 elections in Zamboanga.

Present during the meeting were all the 16 aspirants for the City Council- District 1—incumbent Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar (LDP), Noning Biel (LDP) and Rogelio Valesco Jr. (LDP) and Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Board President Elbert “Bong”Atilano (LP), Campo Islam barangay chairman Nadz Sampang (LP), Zone III barangay chairman Tito Espiritusanto (LDP) and former Councilor Charlie Mariano (LDP) and for District II—incumbent Councilors Eddie Saavedra (LDP), Mike Alavar (LDP), Percival Ramos (LDP) and Vincent Paul Elago (Adelante Zamboanga) and Federation of Barangay Kagawads President Arturo “Art” Onrubia (LP), former Councilor Roel “Elong” Natividad (LP), City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo (LDP) and Benjamin “BG” Guingona IV (LDP).

Also present during the meeting were Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Sec. Jun Abaya of the Department of Transportation and Communication, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda and Sec. Luwalhati Antonino of the Mindanao Development Authority including graduating Councilors Rey Candido and Nonong Guingona.

All the members of the coalition team were properly introduced to President Aquino, who sits as the titular head and party chairman.

President Aquino during the gathering emphasized on his administration’s programs as well as partnership with the coalition.

He stressed that the opposition will always find ways to pick on mistakes in the administration by “belittling accomplishments and downplaying the role of people with the administration who are working hard to make our country great again”.

“We should be the one asking them instead, what have they contributed to our country?”, the president declared.

The president made a brief visit to Zamboanga from Cebu Wednesday afternoon to keynote the Ateneo-initiated forum. After the meeting with the coalition and a visit to the Carmelite monastery, the president returned to Manila via the presidential plane. — Rey Carbonel
