Some 120 children benefited from the feeding program shared by vice mayoral candidate Mercy Arquiza-Fernandez, the leading convenor of the Zamboangueños for the Tansformation of Zamboanga (ZTZ) in Barangay Zone II, this city yesterday morning.

Arquiza was accompanied by council aspirant Jarah Bernardo and their volunteers and supporters. She said the activity is part of ZTZ program to reach out to people and a special way of celebrating the birthday of a good friend, Zone 2 chairman Nonito Arañas.

After serving the hot bowls “lugaw” to children, Mercy listened attentively to the mothers’ chatty tale of woes and problems of community life and had informal chats with barangay officials and residents.

Arquiza said the ZTZ chose Zone 2 as one of the beneficiaries of its feeding program since the barangay is in dire need of various support. She assured them that if blessed with success in the May 2013 elections, she will immediately address the concerns they aired.

“I will immediately review existing unimplemented ordinances and resolutions designed to alleviate poverty, decongest the barangay, improve its sanitation, ensure their peace and order, and otherwise meet their difficulties and hardships head-on,” Arquiza promised.

“I will catalogue these and encourage the incoming council and administration to launch serious implementations and actions without let up! If these are not sufficient,” she continued. “I will encourage authorship by the concerned councilors and sponsorship by the appropriate committee for fast track passage, and administrative implementation of same.”

The activity saw a sizeable audience led by kagawads Romeo Amabuyog, Emil Collado, Pamela Abdulhamid, and Helly Delmo; barangay secretary Maria Ailin Solis and treasurer Jeyzebel Beebe, who listened intently what the vice mayoral aspirant discussed and many of them engaged her in animated dialogue.

During her stint as councilor in Dapitan City, Arquiza became a motherly figure to her constituents who shared her concern especially for the mothers and their children. — HG
