A small cargo boat nearly capsized after it was slammed  by big waves off Baluk-Baluk Island near Basilan last Saturday afternoon.

Basilan Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo disclosed that his command received around 1 p.m. a distress call via cellular phone from Munib Tadjali, skipper of M/L Rafida who was asking for help as the vessel was leaning on one side.

Immediately police and other government agencies dispatched personnel aboard different seacraft and proceeded to the ML Rafida’s location.

Tadjali together with some boat crew unloaded the cargo including sacks of rice so as the boat would not capsize.

Gonzalodo said that Tadjali managed to bring the boat to a mini-wharf  at Barangay Tausan around 4 p.m.

Gonzalodo added that all boat crew were safe except for the cargoes that were thrown into the water. — Dan Toribio Jr.
