Mayor Celso Lobregat has approved the allocation of P9 million as the City Government’s  counterpart in this year’s Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) with a target beneficiary of 3,678 students.

The SPES is a joint undertaking of the local government unit and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on a 60-40 percent sharing agreement. The DOLE-Regional Office is allocating P5.8 million for the program in the city.

Each student-beneficiary will receive a P200 daily wage for the 20-day duration for an equivalent of P4,000 each.

The first batch of SPES beneficiaries composed of 1,560 college students will start the program April 10 to May 8 while the second batch, composed of 2,118 high school students will undergo the program from May 8 to May 31.

The SPES work program includes cleanliness and barangay beautification, street sweeping, maintenance of parks and gardens, janitorial assignments (in offices), assist office activities and simple clerical jobs.

Registration or enlistment of student-applicants starts today, February 14 until March 15 at the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) at the City Social Welfare and Development Office in Pettit Barracks.

Under the law, the student-applicant must be 15-25 years of age (with authenticated birth or baptismal certificate), with passing grades (submission of card/school certificate) and whose parents have a net income not exceeding    P90,000 per annum. Two pices 2x2 pictures are also required.

The SPES is now on its 19th year of implementation in the city and is mandated under RA 9547 which intends to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by providing income or augment their income through encouraging their employment during summer and/ or Christmas vacations.

This year, the entire 98 barangays are provided with a slot allocation. — Sheila Covarrubias
