A boat crew member died of suffocation, while another was in critical condition in the hospital while they were working aboard a cargo vessel docked at the Petron Depot in Lower Calarian at noon last Saturday.

Police identified the fatality as Benhar Amminul y Tahil, 24, married, of Margarita, San Roque. Confined at the hospital is Roger Aninang y Francisco, 39, a native of Masbate City, a quarter master of M/V Hadar of Medzar Shipping Lines.

Boat skipper Mario Adonay told the police that around 8:20 a.m. Saturday, the vessel owned by Hadar Hajiri arrived and dropped anchor at the wharf of Petron Depot to refill diesel.

However, without the instruction of the head of the vessel, Aninang went down to the tanker full of diesel containers which is prohibited if one is not wearing a proper suit.

Aninang was suffocated and became unconscious. Amminul attempted to rescue him but he too was suffocated.

Aninang and Amminul were rushed to the Brent Hospital, but Aninang was declared dead on arrival.

Amminul was confined in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and was still under observation yesterday.

Physicians said the victims suffered from hydro carbon intoxication based on medical findings. – Dan Toribio Jr.
