Multi-sectoral groups coming from the barangays, the academe, other government and non-government organizations yesterday gathered altogether at the City Health Office conference room and forged a partnership in the fight against dengue, a mosquito-borne disease.

Composing the multi-sectoral groups dubbed as Dengue Action Team (Un Fuerza Unido Contra Dengue) were the barangay chairpersons, school principals, health practitioners, police and military officers and other organizations supporting the campaign against dengue.

This developed after the CHO monitored 372 dengue cases with 9 deaths for the first two months (Jan-Feb) 2013 alone. In January this year, Sta. Maria registered 36 cases, Tetuan- 24, Putik- 20, Talon-Talon- 16, Pasonanca- 14, Sta Catalina- 14, Guiwan- 13, Sangali-13, Calarian- 12, Tumaga- 12, Mampang- 10 and San Roque- 10.
City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos said with the latest statistics there is a need for all stakeholders in the community to stand united in the fight against dengue, which claimed 37 lives and 4,028 cases in 2012 that prompted the city government to declare a dengue outbreak.

He said a spot map has already been made in preparation for the Feb. 23 (Saturday) clean-up drive in highly affected communities.
“Using the spot map, the clean-up drive will concentrate in the community with high dengue cases and to spread out to cover the entire barangay,” Dr. Agbulos explained.

For his part, Mayor Celso Lobregat emphasized that the clean-up campaign should first zero in on the specific households with dengue cases then the immediate neighborhood, the community and the barangay as a whole.

Lobregat also directed the officer-in-charge of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, Evelyn las Marias, to use the incoming summer job students in the anti-dengue cleanup campaign.
