House Deputy Speaker and District 1 Rep. Beng Climaco will lead activities marking the 27th Anniversary of the People Power Revolution in the city today, February 25.

Organized by the EDSA People Power Commission (EPPC) Zamboanga Provincial Council, the event in the city will be highlighted by the “Salubungan” to be participated by different sectors at the Rizal Park in front of City Hall at 7am followed by the flag raising ceremony at 8am.

The ‘Salubungan’ is reminiscent of the February 25, 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution when ordinary citizens and members of the religious sector marched together in Edsa and met rebel soldiers to stop military tanks and convince other soldiers to join them in the uprising against the Marcos rule.

The Salubungan will be held simultaneously in Manila, Virac and Dumaguete and covered live and presented via skype during the celebration at the People Power Monument where President Benigno Aquino III will spearhead the event.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and the City Government officials and employees will join in the celebration.

The 27th Edsa People Power Revolution anniversary is themed “Pilipinas Natin, Abot-Tanaw Na!” verbalizing the country’s continuing aspiration to pursue the pledge of building the nation in the spirit of People Power.

“The activities for EDSA 27 will highlight our commitment to work together for Pilipinas Natin, the country we all aspire for”, EPPC Commissioner Cesar Sarino said in a letter to Cong. Climaco.

Twenty-seven years ago, Filipinos showed the world that justice can be achieved through peaceful means, and that a united people can lay the path for a return to democracy, Sarino stressed. “Today, we celebrate People Power for it continues to inspire us to strive for a country of shared progress and opportunity”. — Marvin Segura
