Zamboanga City today celebrates a triumphant milestone marking the day when the first set of appointed officials of the city were formally installed into office 77 years ago.

Aurora Congressman Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara will be the City’s honoured guest during a commemorative program that will be highlighted by the competicion de selyo or seal competition participated by various schools and government and private agencies.

Cong. Angara is scheduled to arrive in the city this morning from Manila and will be met by Mayor Celso Lobregat and other city officials at the local airport. He will be having a number of engagements together with the mayor before proceeding to the Baliwasan grandstand for the Dia de Zamboanga activities.

The 76th Dia de Zamboanga celebration today kicks off at 1pm with a parade from the City Hall premises to the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex where the seal competition participated by government and private groups will be held.

The activities will culminate with a commemorative program where Cong. Angara will  address Zamboangueños at 3pm, also at the Baliwasan grandstand.

The Dia de Zamboanga activities initially reeled off February 9 with the Dia Roseller Lim. The cheer dance and hip hop competitions were held Feb. 22 and the highly successful 2013 Zamboanga International Film Festival was held from Feb. 22-23 with the partnership of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the City Government.

Today is a non-working holiday in Zamboanga per declaration by Malacañang. — Sheila Covarrubias
