The wife and daughter of a top lawyer was wounded after two armed men broke into their house and attacked them with knives in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur at dawn last Tuesday.

Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca, information officer of the Police Regional Office, disclosed that incident took place at the house of Atty. Emmanuel Opay in Barangay Kahayahan, Bayog at past midnight.

In a mobile phone interview,  Opay said the intruders stabbed his wife Rosemarie, 50, a school teacher, and their daughter Zenaiah, 13, a grade six pupil.

The lawyer said that his wife was scheduled to be released from the hospital while their daughter remained confined with seven stab wounds in the body.

Opay said there were valuables taken away by the attackers and one of them was later identified as Lito Flores y Mohammad, a small-scale miner who was arrested while his cohort named Jun Jun Buhali is still at large.

Opay said he was not in the house when the two armed men broke in and attacked his wife and daughter.

He said that his wife woke up after she heard someone inside the house. When she checked, the armed men stabbed her and their daughter.

Mrs. Opay was able to scream for help which prompted the attackers to flee.

The victims were rushed to the hospital and Flores was arrested during a follow-up operation.

During investigation, Flores told the police that it was Buhari who is angry at Atty. Opay in connection with the ongoing squabble at Bayog’s small scale mining.

However, the lawyer said he could not remember he encountered any problem in the small scale mining in Bayog as he is handling a case for those legitimate small scale miners in the said place

Opay said they will file a case against Flores and Buhari. – Dan Toribio Jr.
