At least 45 graduating academic scholars of the city government are currently attending a three-day humanitarian ambassador” leadership training in coordination with the Philippine Red Cross and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation.

In his message, Mayor Celso Lobregat took the opportunity to inform the scholars about the various infrastructure projects that his administration had implemented, especially for the education sector and the barangays as well.

He urged the scholars to help in informing the people about the good, the positive and the best of Zamboanga, contrary to what the critics are saying that the city has lagged behind. “Si oi kita kanila nuay cosa ya hace di aton administracion. Poreso ustedes abla kanila we have done so many great things for Zamboanga,” he said.

Now on its second day, the training is a fellowship activity among city scholars who endeavor to inculcate the values of working together under the spirit of collegiality, solidarity and volunteerism as a way of giving back while instilling in them the values of moral obligation and social responsibility through various forms of activities.

Scholarship Coordinator Emily Delos Reyes of the City Human Resource Management Office said the scholars will undergo series of lectures by the Red Cross volunteers, stressing that the scholars are trained to become blood donors, organize regular mobile blood donation activities in their own communities and to assist in the blood services and related activities of the Red Cross.

During the training, the Humanitarian Ambassador’s Program will also be launched. It is a blood recruitment advocacy program of the city government in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross to augment the city’s timely availability of blood supply.

To highlight the training, the scholars will sign a pledge of commitment in which they vow to uphold the fundamental principles of the Red Cross Movement which speaks of “universal voluntary service to humanity without boundaries in propagating a culture of impartial service to mankind for the protection of human life and health worldwide.”— Vic Larato
