Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said that generator sets are on stand by on Election Day as part of their contingency plan in case brownouts occur during the conduct of electoral exercises.

He noted that Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines has battery life that could last for 12 hours, enough to cover the entire voting period.

“Meron din kami genset all over pero hindi ganun kadami kasi ang Mindanao talagang noon pa problema na yan noong 2011, 2012. Nagkaroon kami general registration July 2012 so bumili kami ng bago set lahat all over,” Brillantes said.

On the other hand, the Comelec chief expressed concern on the possibility that the machines might be stolen during power shortage on Election Day.

“Noong (manual) bigla nagba brownout tapos nawawala na yung ballot box, nawawala na yung balota. Pero now, hindi naman e. Ang problem lang kapag nag brownout baka mawala yung PCOS,” said Brillantes.

Meanwhile, he said they are looking to meet with the National Power Corporation (Napocor) to discuss the situation in Mindanao following reports of possible severe brownouts in the region during the May polls.
