A city council without an opposition bloc or which has opposition that is being suppressed not only violates the true spirit of democracy but can also give rise to grave abuse of authority.

Thus warned city council aspirant for District II Roseller ‘Ller’ Enriquez during last Monday night’s kick off rally by Fuerza Zamboanga at Plaza Pershing.

Enriquez, a retired government broadcaster with Radyong Bayan said Fuerza Zamboanga strongly advocates the restoration of an independent city council in Zamboanga City and respects the city august body as a co-equal of city hall, the executive branch.

“I am aspiring to be a member of the city council but one which I would prefer to be free of any undue pressure or influence from city hall,” said the younger brother of former councilor Max Enriquez.

Ller Enriquez in his brief address also said the council must resort back to respect for procedures like in the disbursement of public funds.

He said every fund release must carried out with corresponding ordinance as money of the city is money of the people and must be safeguarded at all times.

He also stressed the role of a city councilor as primarily the job of legislating laws which must be beneficial for the greater good of the majority.

He hopes to earn a seat in the city august body as he has a list of priorities which he would like to pursue that he thinks will benefit the people.
