City Engineer Luis Despalo has given assurances the City Council building will be ready for use in time for the May 13 mid-term elections’ canvassing of votes in this southern port city.

Despalo said the rehabilitation works of the City Council three-story edifice is already 98 percent completed.

Despalo said he is optimistic that the finishing touches as well as the installation of air condition units will be completed within this month.

The City Council building, specifically the session hall, had been the venue for the canvassing of votes in past several elections.

However, the city government has initiated repair works due to some structural defects on the building.

The rehabilitation works, undertaken by a private construction firm, started last year.

The City Council as well as its entire staffs are temporarily holding session and office at the City Library since the building is under repair.

Meanwhile, Despalo disclosed that personnel from his office and Commission on Elections (Comelec) have inspected the City Council building last Monday.

The City Council building is ready for use once the air condition system is in place, Despalo said. — TPG
