A municipal councilor of Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur and five members of the Bantay Bayan group narrowly escaped death after they were ambushed by gunmen at sea off Sitio Pigkolot, Barangay Pisaan, Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur, Thursday afternoon.

Police Insp. Ricardo Lubaton, chief, Dinas Municipal Police Station,  in a phone interview disclosed that the incident occurred while Councilor Momar idris, together with five  members of his Bantay Bayan were on their way home after conducting sea patrol and checking a fish keeper.

Gunmen aboard another seacraft opened fire on the three pumpboats of Idris group. As a result, one of the pumpboats sustained bullet holes causing it to sink. Fortunately its passengers managed to jump into the sea and swam to safety. Idris’ group returned fire triggering a 40 minute firefight.

Sensing the superiority of the government forces, the gunmen fled towards the high seas of Dinas.

After a follow-up operation, police later identified the gunmen as  Alim Manan, Ismael Lao, Cantal, Inggo and Omi Bonga, Lapo Billy, Dak Sulaiman and seven other unidentified companions.
