Zamboanga City officially ushered in the summer season with the start of the 2013 Zamboanga Summer Festival, Saturday, April 13.

Now on its 11th year, the annual celebration kicked off its summer-long activities with the 3rd Duathlon Challenge and the 11th Open Kite Flying competition at the Paseo del Mar drawing hundreds of participants to both contests.

A total of 19 teams of three joined the Duathlon Challenge – a physical test of fitness and endurance combining the rigors of cycling and running. The 39-km race route began at the Paseo del Mar, with participants cycling their way to barangay Guisao before pedaling back to barangay Putik to start the running leg of the race. Participants had to race back to Paseo del Mar as one team to officially finish.

Team Bikestop, composed of Vincent Platitas, Alfritz Gascon and Alberto Alfecite claimed the top spot, clocking in a race time of approximately 1 hour and 22 minutes. Their team took home a cash prize of P12,000 and a trophy.

Coming in second and third were two teams from the Zamboanga City Fitness Biking Organization (ZCFBO). They received a trophy and a cash prize of P9,000 and P6,000, respectively. On the other hand, the next seven fastest teams received a medal and P1,500 each.

Meanwhile, kites of all shapes and sizes dotted the skies as a throng of kite aficionados gathered for the 11th Open Kite Flying Festival. A total of 40 registered kite entries were showcased under the flat (2-D) and figure (3-D) categories.

Participants were given two tries to get their kites airborne. Each kite was also evaluated according to design, in terms of artistry and uniqueness, ease of flight and gracefulness.

Moreover, kites had to remain aloft for approximately five minutes. “The higher you go, the higher you score,” explained the organizers to the participants milling nearby.

The Kite Festival also featured three special prizes: the Chikiting prize for the smallest kite, the Jumbo prize for the biggest kite and the Bulador del Pueblo prize for the kite most favored by the crowd.

Winners to the contest, according to categories are the following: Figure Kite Category (3D)—special awards went to Caryl Gean Saavedra (Chikiting kite and Jumbo kite) and Ruben Quibilan (Bulador del Pueblo); Major prizes went to Prince Mar Revillas (1st place), Genesis Kyle Bisnar (2nd place) and Constantino Jayson (3rd place).
