District 1. Representative and Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Beng Climaco-Salazar has requested Aviation Security Group chief PCSupt. Pedro Desuasido Jr. to strictly implement the gun ban policy in all airports specifically the Zamboanga International Airport to ensure safety and protection of the passengers and the airport facilities.

This, Cong. Climaco said, is an offshoot of the August 5 explosion at the Zamboanga International Airport that killed two and wounded several other persons.

As this developed, PCSupt. Desuasido assured Rep. Climaco of the full support and cooperation of the Philippine National Police on this matter.

On the other hand, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Alfonso G. Cusi responded positively to Rep. Climaco’s request of re-implementing the 24-hour monitoring of the airport by the airport traffic controllers.

Director Cusi relayed to Rep. Climaco that the 24-hour monitoring has been returned in the operation and stressed CAAP’s support to Rep. Climaco’s proposals in improving security in the area.

The airport is Mindanao’s third-busiest airport and the gateway to the entire Western Mindanao area.

Climaco takes the lead in the proposed plan of relocating the airport to a new site which will cost the government some P9 billion for the transfer.

Recently, Rep. Climaco turned-over and endorsed the copy of the feasibility study of Zamboanga International Airport Development Project to Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Cayetano W. Paderanga Jr., also the Director-General of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
