With 15 days left before election, local candidates of various political parties are going on high gear to lure voters as reports of massive vote buying by one party have become more pronounced in the barangays.

Meanwhile, five candidates for the city council in the first district belonging to the United Nationalists Alliance (UNA) have expressed their support for mayoral candidate Erico Basilio “Erbie” Fabian on condition that UNA mayoralty bet Romeo Jalosjos is disqualified by the Supreme Court to run for public office.

A top local lawyer said that it was unlikely that the high court would issue a ruling on the qualification of Jalosjos to run for public office this late in the campaign.

Last week, Jalosjos said that if the high tribunal’s decision is unfavorable to his candidacy, he will not support any local candidate and instead campaign for his candidates in Zamboanga del Norte and Sibugay. That implied that he would leave it up to his candidates and supporters to choose their candidate for mayor.

A highly-reliable source close to UNA said that the five council aspirants are led by incumbent Councilor Jaime Cabato who, in the latest survey conducted by a Manila-based polling firm, is ranked No.1 in the first district. Incumbent Councilor Mel Sadain who is aligned with Fabian is running a close second.

Another UNA council bet Antonio “Butch” Blanco also hinted last week that if Jalosjos is not given the green light by the high court to run, he will support the candidacy of Fabian.

Likewise, several of Jalosjos’ supporters have come forward to say that they will shift their support to Fabian in the event the SC counts Jalosjos out of the race. They maintained, however, that all the other UNA candidates, from vice mayor, congressmen down to the last city councilor-aspirant, will be carried in their ballots. — BJ
