UNA vice mayoralty aspirant Mercy Arquiza on Friday urged Zamboangueños to support sensibly for  honest and sincere candidates in the forthcoming May 13 elections so as to ensure a change in the city for its better future.

During a rally in Tumaga on Friday night, Arquiza also asked their supporters and poll watchers to be vigilant and prevent electoral fraud.

“I urge all the people to come to the polling precincts on May 13 and cast their vote to devoted, honest and sincere candidates, who could work wholeheartedly for progress and develpment,” she said.

“I also appeal to party members to woo the electorate to reject those who are not pro-poor and pro-people and to put the whole local UNA team to power on May 13,” Arquiza added.

The vice mayoralty bet is advocating for a hardworking, independent, and unified City Council

“On my 100 days in office, if ever elected I will strive hard to preserve and restore the didgnity of Sangguniang Panlunsod members,” Arquiza said.

“I will also give chairmanship to all candidates who will win, whether they are from yellow, blue, green or red team,” she  continued.

Arquiza assured the people once elected as vice mayor, the City Council will not be a rubber stamp of the chief executive.

“It should be independent that is how it should be, an independent body separated from the executive branch. We will be able to think or decide well whatever the ordinances will be passed that are pro-people and pro-poor,” Arquiza said.

Arquiza, meantime, gave an advice that candidates can be judged in two ways: the positions they take on issues and the leadership qualities and experience they would bring to the office.

“Both are important. Your first step in picking a candidate is to decide which issues you care most about and what qualities you want in a leader,” she explained.

She said when you consider issues, “think about community problems that you want people in government to address.    “You may be interested in the power crisis, peace and order problem, unemployment, health care, etc. When you consider leadership qualities, think about the characteristics you want in an effective leader,” she said. —  HG
