Election violence continues to occur in Zamboanga Peninsula. This time a municipal councilor and three of his followers narrowly escaped death after two gunmen opened fire on them in Barangay Nonoyan, Baliguian, Zamboanga del Norte last Monday morning.

Escaped unhurt were Edgar Vertudazo Jr., Sangguniang Bayan Member of Baliguian town, his two brothers Narciso, 40, and Roger, 23, and James Elago.

The attack took place about 5:30 a.m. while Vertudazo and his followers were on their way to Barangay San Jose, Baliguian. Two gunmen aboard a motorcycle chased Vertudazo’s motorcycle and the backrider pulled out a handgun and shot them repeatedly.

As a result the victims’ motorcycle crashed on the road but fortunately they managed to dodge the bullets from the attackers.

Roger and Elago sustained injuries due to the crash of their motorcycle and were rushed to the Siocon Hospital for treatment.

Reliable source said the attack could be connected to the May 13 election.
