Mayor Celso Lobregat has commended police authorities for the arrest of one of the most wanted persons in Zamboanga City during a joint operation in the nearby province the other day.

The elusive Margani Samla also known as Binladen, said to be a notorious drug lord from Recodo, was captured by joint police operatives from Zamboanga and Basilan in Sangbay Island, Basilan. The arrest came after several attempts through operations launched by authorities in the city over the past months.

“We congratulate the Zamboanga City Police Office, the Basilan Police specifically Col. Edwin de Ocampo and Gen. Mario Yanga for this accomplishment. This [Bin Laden] is one of the most wanted persons if not the most wanted person in the city,” Lobregat declared.

Gen. Yanga, Police Deputy Regional Director for Administration, has been temporarily assigned to Basilan in line with the elections set on Monday. Proper coordination between Gen. Yanga and Col. de Ocampo led to the capture of the said wanted person, who faces a warrant of arrest for murder under Criminal Case No. 25554 issued on May 11, 2012 by Regional Trial Court Judge Jesus Carbon.

Lobregat said perseverance and dedication to duty are factors that resulted to the successful operation. “Our authorities operated in Recodo and he [Samla] eluded arrest. Pero cosa ya hace el maga police, they did not leave the ara and maintained visibility in Recodo so that the subject can no longer return and another group of operatives concentrated in Basilan that led to the capture of the subject”.

He added that the authorities deserve commendations as they are working very hard to help maintain peace and tranquillity in the city.

Lobregat hoped that the community and other sectors will continue to  support and cooperate with the authorities so that peace and order could be sustained.— Sheila Covarrubias
