A poll watcher of a mayoralty aspirant in Panglima Estino municipality, Sulu and a minor were killed while four others were wounded in an ambush yesterday morning.

Information received by DZT identified one of those killed as Mardimer Sabri. He sustained bullet wounds in the body.   Wounded were Nurhati Mahamud, Nurhima Mahamud, Nho Asunion and Arden Ardunajar, all poll watchers of candidate Ben Estino.

No information yet on the identity of the minor killed in the attack.

It was learned that the poll watchers were riding on vehicles on their way to polling precincts when gunmen positioned on roadsides opened fire on them around 6:45 a.m. at the border of Barangay Kamih Pungod near Tiptipun Elementary School,

The ambushers escaped before soldiers and policemen arrived in the area.  The wounded victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Police and military have conducted hot pursuit operation against the ambushers, authorities said yesterday.

Despite the incident, voting continued, but authorities declared a heightened alert in the said municipality. – Dan Toribio Jr.
