To commemorate the heroism and leadership of Gen. Vicente Solis Alvarez, the City will spearhead the 5th Dia De Gen. Vicente Solis Alvarez celebration today, May 18.

A commemorative mass will be held at the Fort Pilar at 4 PM. This will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and program at the Plaza Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez, to be led by Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar and Congressman Erico Basilio A. Fabian.

Expected to grace the ceremony are various city officials and department heads, representatives of national government agencies, military and police personnel, schools and Ms. Georgina Alvarez, granddaughter of Gen. Alvarez.

A highlight of the annual commemorative celebration will be the awarding of the winners of the Gen. Vicente Alvarez Essay Writing Contest.  The writing challenge was held on May 10 as part of the activities of the 2013 Summer Festival.

A revolutionary hero, Gen. Alvarez marshalled a force of able-bodied Zamboangueños against Spanish forces under the command of Governor General Diego de los Rios during the siege of Fort Pilar in 1899.

After more than a month of fierce fighting, Governor General delos Rios surrendered to the revolutionary forces on May 18, 1899.

City Ordinance 334 declares the 18th of May as the Dia di Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez. The annual celebration commemorates the historic victory in Fort Pilar and heroism of Gen. Alvarez and his men against the Spanish colonizers.

Gen. Alvarez was born on April 5, 1862 in Magay, Zamboanga City. He spent two years (1895-1897) in Sulu to pacify warring royalties and was conferred the honorary title “Datu Tumanggong” for his efforts.

He was appointed General of the Revolutionary Force of the Philippines on May 14, 1899.
