Mayor Celso L. Lobregat paid homage to the heroism and valor of Gen. Vicente Alvarez and his men under the revolutionary forces during the 5th Dia de General Alvarez celebration last Saturday, May 18.

Following a commemorative mass in Fort Pilar, a number of organizations and offices offered flowers and wreaths at the Plaza Vicente Alvarez, while a simple program served to recount the significant contribution of Gen.Alvarez and his men to the City and history also followed.

In his message, Lobregat reiterated his call for unity, citing Gen. Alvarez and his men as examples. “One hundred and fourteen years ago, Gen. Alvarez and his men showed us what we Filipinos can and must do,” said Lobregat. “They taught us that regardless of all things that make us different from one another, if we come and work together, there is so very little that we cannot do.”

Representing the Alvarez family during the ceremony was Georgina Alvarez delos Reyes, great-granddaughter of Gen. Alvarez, who expressed her gratitude for the City’s continued remembrance. “It is an honor and a privilege to our family,” said Delos Reyes.

Capping the ceremony was the awarding of the winners of the 4th General Alvarez Essay Writing contest. Emerging triumphant was Marco Louie Maneja from the Universidad de Zamboanga, followed by Antonette Paragas of Pilar College and Kimberly Charisse Luzon of Western Mindanao State University.

A total of 10 participants joined this year’s contest which carried the theme “Virtue and Valor: The Characteristics of a True Hero”. Winners of the writing tilt received cash prizes, while remaining participants received consolation prizes.
