Fresh from his victory in the May 13 elections, Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday distributed the city government’s cash incentives amounting to P374,800 to 301 athletes who reaped gold, silver and bronze medals during the recent national and regional sports competitions.

Included in the cash incentives were 13 differently-abled athletes who brought honor to Zamboanga City for harvesting 3 gold and 5 bronze medals during the Philippine Sports Association for Differently-able (PhilSPADA) held from March 15 t0 23 in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

The medalists were Maximo Dagayluan (athletics), who received P2,000 for gold and P500 for bronze in athletics; Joseph Gregana received P500 for bronze in chess; Cecilia Napoloreyes received P1,000 for gold in powerlifting; Maritess Abon received P3,000 for gold in swimming.

Radigundo Ponceras, Albert Lledo and Alex Barioga received P500 each for a bronze medal each in goal ball. Of the 6 coaches, 4 received P1,000 each and 2 others P500 each.

In his message after the distribution of cash incentives at City Hall Conference Room, Lobregat thanked and congratulated all the athletes, especially the differently-abled ones, for bringing honor to Zamboanga.

The granting of cash incentives to athletes is a program of the city government under Lobregat’s administration in a bid to entice the local youths and adults alike to engage in sports of their choice, thereby swaying them from illegal vices and other unproductive and unhealthy activities.

It is institutionalized through an ordinance that grants P1,000 cash incentive for gold medal, P700 for silver medal and P500 for bronze in local and regional sports events. The cash incentives are higher for national and international sporting competitions.

Meanwhile, at least 361 elementary and secondary students also partook from the city’s cash incentives for their outstanding performance in the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA) Meet from February 27 to March 3 in Dao, Zamboanga del Sur.

The city’s ZPRAA contingent bested other participants in various sports, notably in athletics, baseball, softball, arnis, tennis, swimming and basketball, among others.

Present during the distribution were City Sports Officer Expedito Patiño together with his staff, coaches and parents of the athletes. — Vic Larato
