The City came together for a night of style, fashion and beauty as it celebrated the 2013 Festival de las Bellas y Flores last Saturday, May 25, at the Paseo del Mar, culminating Zambo Summer Fest 2013.

Now on its 11th year, the festival seeks to preserve the cultural heritage of the City and to showcase Zamboangueño creativity and craftmanship. A total of ten entries were showcased and featured in three festival categories - arcos, gowns and the search for the prettiest señorita.

For the Arcos category, the entries of Elmer Julian and Zen Descalso emerged as the 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, with Neri Jaruda’s arco claiming the top spot. In the Gown category, Shady Siocon’s creation bested all other entries. Meanwhile, Neri Jaruda’s and Usni Sali’s works came in at 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Henkel Julian, modelling Siocon’s winning gown entry, was crowned as the prettiest señorita for the night, with Dianne Daung and Elvie Colinares emerging as runner ups.

All winners received cash prizes and plaques of recognition.

In his message, Mayor Celso Lobregat said that the festival also honors the strong women of the City, who have taken on bigger roles in society. “It is a celebration of the resiliency and fortitude of the Zamboangueña,” said Lobregat, citing the late Maria Clara Lobregat and Mayor-elect Beng Climaco-Salazar as women to be admired and emulated.

“We have so much respect for the Zamboangueña,” added Lobregat. “We recognize their ability to bring progress to the City.”

The festival was the culminating activity of the 2013 City Summer Festival, spearheaded annually by the City Government, through the City Tourism Division. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
