Troops of the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion clashed with some 20 fully armed New People’s Army guerrillas in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, last Thursday morning.

Report reaching the Police Tegional Office-9 headquarters  disclosed that the firefight occurred around 11:30 a.m. at Barangay Dagum.

The soldiers led by 2Lt. Michael Paul Caspe was conducting patrol when they received an information on the presence of the rebel group.

Immediately Caspe and his men proceeded to the said place and chanced upon the NPA rebels who were reported to have a plan to conduct nefarious activity in the area.

Sensing the arrival of the soldiers, the rebels opened fire which triggered a gunbattle which lasted for ten minutes.

Realizing that they could not match the military force, the rebels withdrew and escape towards the hinterland.

There was no reported casualty on the military side,  and it was believed that some of the rebels were either wounded or killed in the clash. — Noning R. Antonio
