National Commission on Muslim Filipinos Zamboanga Peninsula acting Regional Director Hji. Dennison M. Abidin disclosed that June 6, 2013 is a Muslim legal holiday. This is in celebration of LailatuI Izra Wal Miraj also known as The Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The observance of Muslim legal holidays is mandated under the country’s statute, namely Presidential Decree 1083 or the Code ot Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines; Civil Service Commission Resolution No 81- 1277; Republic Act No. 9177 and Republic Act 9849.

The event is significant for Muslim because it was on this blessed night where the Holy Prophet (PBUH) saw in a most radiant vision the physical as well as some of the spiritual signs of God. It was also during this glorious evening the five daily prayers were prescribed by Allah (SWT).

Muslims spend the night by reading the Qur’an, listening to or studying the story of Izra and Miraj in Mosques and at home and performing non-obligatory prayers.
