The retrieval team has concluded the search and retrieval operation Tuesday after they recovered the remains of the last of the four children-victim of landslide in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) spokesman Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca said yesterday the remains of the last victim, Eugene Maghanoy, was recovered under the rubble around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Maghanoy, 9, was among the four children buried alive in a landslide in the afternoon of last May 28 in Barangay Sayao, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The other three victims were Maghanoy’s elder sister, Fatima, and their cousins namely Sherlyn Mae,7 and Ezequiel, 3.

Prior to the landslide incident, the victims took shelter at an abandoned house of Simeon Buray amid the continuous heavy downpour.

Suddenly, Buray’s house was covered by a huge volume of soil that eroded from a mountain slope.

It took days for the search and retrieval team to retrieve the remains of the victims since they have to remove the bamboos and coconut trees amid the rubble as thick as 150 meters.

The search and retrieval operation was jointly undertaken by the municipal government of Kabasalan, police, military, and other concerned sector. — TPG
