The Armed Forces’ Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) will adopt the same security measures it implemented during the May 13 mid-term elections here in the region for the October barangay elections.

Wesmincom spokesman Col. Rodrigo Gregorio said last month’s elections could be the most ever peaceful political exercise experienced here in Western Mindanao.

Gregorio said the deployment of soldiers in strategic areas has discouraged politicians and their followers from creating trouble like intimidating voters in their communities.

Gregorio also said that the military took part in efforts to convince contending politicians to sign peace covenants.

He said that rivalry during barangay elections is usually intense because it centered on the communities where the candidates live.

Wesmincom covers the entire Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, which are part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). — LS
