Jolo under state of calamity: Fire, storm destroy 200 houses, kill 8 PDF Print E-mail

Jolo, Sulu Mayor Hussin Amin has declared his town under a state of calamity after it was hit by a fire that razed 28 houses on Monday and a storm surge and flashflood that destroyed 190 other houses on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the town’s eight barangays.

Reports relayed by DXMM’s Jeff Sampang to DZT correspondent Richard Falcatan disclosed that the fire, storm surge and flashfloods have also caused the death of eight people. Two others were missing as of press time and 10 more suffered injuries.

The conflagration took place in Barangay Tulay, while the storm surge and flashfloods wrought havoc to the town’s eight barangays, including Busbus, Chinese Pier,Takkuttakut, Tulay and Walled City.
Sampang told Falcatan that all the barangays, except for Busbus, were underwater.

The reports do not include yet the destruction the storm surge has brought to the coastal towns in Jolo island. Houses were reported to have destroyed in Indanan town and Landslides occurred in Bud Datu and Anuling where casualties were reported.

Sampang said that Mayor Amin has instructed the chairmen of the eight barangays to make use of calamity funds to be spent for assistance to the affected residents.

The Sulu and Jolo provincial and municipal disaster councils held a joint response meeting yesterday and decided to serve hot meals and bottled water to the numerous victims.

Sampang’s reports also said that the DSWD has counted 800 families affected by the four days of blaze and storm surge and twenty three outpatients treated at Sulu Provincial Hospital.
