Zambo farmers shine in Reg’l Gawad Saka search PDF Print E-mail

Five entries from Zamboanga City were declared as winners of the Regional Gawad Saka search during the Regional Farm Family Forum (FFF) held from May 28-29 at the Farmers Haven, Dao, Pagadian City.

Zamboanga City-based organizations and farmers claimed five out of the seven 2013 Regional Gawad Saka categories – Outstanding Young Farmer Organization (Greenfield 4H Club – Tulungatung), Outstanding Cassava Farmer (Hakim Jala – Lubigan), Outstanding High Value Crops Development Program Entrepreneur (Fe Hao – Sta. Maria), Outstanding High Value Commercial Crops (Vegetables) farmer (Ricardo Montebon - Lunzuran) and Outstanding Corn Farmer (Dolores Dizon - Bolong).

They will be representing the region, along with other winners, in the National Gawad Saka Search.

The FFF is a regular project spearheaded by the Department of Agricutlure – Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI). The FFF aims to promote food security and self-sufficiency, through rural-based organizations (RBOs) and the DA.

Aside from the Gawad Saka awards, the City also emerged victorious in various 4-H competitions held during the 2-day gathering.

For the commodity category, the winning entries included products developed by Zamboanga City farmers such as the Sarsa de Arroz by Loisa Rose delos Reyes of Mampang (Rice Development category, 1st place), the Ube Latina by Sharza Abrera of Tulungatung (Rootcrops category, 1st place), the Indigenous Handicraft Using Rice Hull by Reymark Marcos of Culianan (Handicraft category, 1st place), the Zamboanga Beef Chunk by Kier dela Calsada from Mangusu (Livestock and Poultry Development, 1st place).

Winners for the different competitions also included: Ralie Ditosil of Ayala for the Postermaking Contest (1st place), Rizza Earl Angeles of Mampang for the Quiz Bee (1st place), Rey Cris Quijano of Tolosa for the Extemporaneous Speech Contest (3rd place), and Romeo Saavedra of Culianan for the Singing Contest (2nd place). The combined efforts of the Zamboanga City FA, RIC and 4-H group, on the other hand gained 2nd place in the Cultural presentation.

The winners, along with City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat and project coordinators paid a courtesy visit on Mayor Celso Lobregat, June 4 in City Hall where they presented their plaques and trophies and thanked the latter for the continuous support to the agriculture sector.

Attending the annual forum were provincial, city and municipal local government units (LGUs) and RBOs from region’s five cities and three provinces. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
