A speeding passenger van crashed on a balete tree after the driver attempted to avoid a dog crossing the highway of Lamitan City in Basilan Thursday afternoon, leaving 16 people injured.

A report from the Highway Patrol Group disclosed that the van was running on high speed along the highway in Barangay Ubit when a dog suddenly crossed the road. The driver identified as a certain Sakirin abruptly swerved the van to avoid hitting the dog, making him lost control of the steering wheel and sending the vehicle crashing on a balete tree.

HPG Basilan chief SPO4 Arson Aripin said the tree collapsed because of the strong impact ofthe crash.

The 16 passengers sustained injuries and bone fractures. They underwent treatment at the Dr. Torrres Memorial Hospital. Sakirin himself was reported in critical condition.

Aripin said that a check on the van’s registration paper showed it is two years expired and Sakirin wasdriving without  a license.

Aripin added that a case of reeckless imprudence resulting to multiple injuries will be filed against Sakirin.
