Councilor Gerky Valesco yesterday stressed the city’s latest landmark Plaza del Pilar is a beautiful project of the city because other than it being the newest addition as tourist destination, the Plaza also serves as a showroom of locally manufactured products and foods.

Valesco, one of the City Council's main proponents of the project, said Plaza del Pilar is a complete park because it also functions as a display center of locally-made products which encourage residents to develop sense of  entrepreneurship.

“The plaza is a very beautiful project of the city because it is also functional. While it is a place for people to visit, it also serves as a showroom of products that are produced and manufactured here in our city as there is the Hecho de Zamboanga Pasalubong Center," said the councilor.

Valesco is the main author of the Ordinance that created and established the first ever Pasalubong Center in the city which the Council approved wayback in 2008.

He said local residents have appreciated the Plaza del Pilar because it is near Fort Pilar where people have an alternative place to go after hearing mass, say prayer or after lighting candles at the Shrine.

“People can now bring their families in a wholesome place to unwind and relax, the Plaza is so accessible and our constituents can also buy something for their loved ones," Valesco said.

Last October 10, 2010, the park was inaugurated by Mayor Celso Lobregat with Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim as guest amid complaint filed by Councilor Jawo Jimenez who is questioning the legality of the ordinance of the park before the Department of Justice.
