A farm youth from Mangusu emerged as a top winner in one of the major competitions held during a national congress in Palawan last week.

Representing Region 9, Kier de la Calsada and his entry (Zamboanga Meat Chunks) bested 15 other regional entries competing under the Livestock and Poultry Development (Meat Processing) category at the 61st National Farm Youth (4-H) Congress, held from June 11 – 13 at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Other winners include Zamboanga 4-H youths Loisa Rose delos Reyes of Mampang (“Sarsa de Arroz” - Rice Development category, 4th place), Sharza Abrera of Tulungatung (“Ube Latina” - Rootcrops category, 4th place) and Reymark Marcos of Culianan (Indigenous Handicraft Using Rice Hull - Handicraft category, 5th place). The City also placed 4th and 5th for the Quiz Bee and Poster competitions, respectively.

Dela Calsada and company were part of the delegation which represented Region 9 in the national congress in the wake of their success at the Regional Farm Forum last May in Pagadian.

Together with City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, the 4-H youths visited Mayor Celso Lobregat for a courtesy call yesterday, June 17, to present their plaques and certificates.

Also present during the call were City Coordinator for 4-H Lorna Bautista, Manicahan Field Officer Roel Cambonga and Curuan District Officer Richard Manlincon.

In a separate competition, the Greenfield 4H Club of Tulungatung was chosen as one of the national entries to be evaluated for the upcoming national Gawad Saka search, under the Outstanding Young Farmer Organization category.

Last year, it was the Monteverde 4-H Club of Culianan which bagged the Most Outstanding Young Farmer Organization.
