Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday morning formally turned over the management and operations of the city’s Seminar and Training Center to its host, the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC).

The mayor joined ZCSPC president Nora Ponce, administrative staff, faculty, students and guests in a simple ceremony to commemorate the event.

In his message, Lobregat thanked ZCSPC for its support to his administration and enjoined them to take care and make maximum use of the building.

The P8.864M Seminar and Training Center is the product of the accord forged on October 23, 2008 between the city government and ZCSPC, represented by then president Lionel Villavieja. The said MOA allowed the city government to use 845.86 square meters of land located within the college’s premises for the construction of a three-storey building for public use.

On July 2, 2010, new ZCSPC president Ponce communicated to Lobregat the college’s intent to manage the same facility for the hands-on training of their Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) students.

Recognizing the important role of educational institutions, such as ZCSPC, in molding and training students, both parties signed an amended MOA last May 2 turning over management, operations, supervision and maintenance of the said training facility to ZCSPC but with the government retaining ownership of the same.

Presidents of various colleges and universities in the country who are newly-elected officers of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities in Industrial Technology (PACUIT), Inc. also witnessed the event, adding an extra layer of significance to the proceedings. In attendance were Drs. Olympio Caparas (Technological University of the Philippines), Bonifacio Villanueva (Cebu Technological University), Perfecto Alibin (University of Southeastern Philippines), Luis Sorolla (Carlos Hilado Memorial State College), Elpidio Magante (Bohol Island State University), Ricardo Rotoras (Mindanao University of Science and Technology), Cornilio Garcia (Ramon Magsaysay Technological University), Baldomero Marinez (Siquijor State College), and Renato Alba (Western Visayas College of Science and Technology).

The mayor was accompanied by Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde, Councilor Luis Biel III, Philippine Red Cross administrator Victor Liozo ZCSPC alumni president Eddie Cruz, among others. — Claudine Uniana
