The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Regional Office 9-A basedin Zamboanga City headed by Mr. Dennison M. abidin, Acting Regional Director, has organized a Task Force on instruction of the Honorable Mehol K. Sadain, NCMF Secretary/CEO and in accordance with one of the mandates of the office, to sight the new moon of the coming month of Ramadan in coordination with the Ulama, Darul Ifta and some Muslim religious leaders.

The group will be deployed to the different strategic areas in Zamboanga City including the new favorite moon sighting area, the Paseo del Mar, where it is comfortable to see the setting of the sun on Monday, July 8, 2013.

The Ulama who will be in-charge of disseminating the information shall be on stand-by at the radio and television stations monitoring this event from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday. If the new moon is sighted during the moon-sighting (Niyata) on July 8, 2013, as enjoined by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the fasting Month of Ramadhan will start the following day, July 9, 2013. if not sighted, it will be on July 10, 2013. Another moon-sighting activity will be conducted on the 6th day of August 2013 to determine the end of Ramadhan fasting and observance of Eidl Fitr.    Director Abidin said that Muslim legal holiday would fall on the last day of fasting, but not the first day of fasting.

Such is the case, sighting the coming of a new moon is in accordance with the hadith. During the lifetime of Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAW) sighting the new moon was sometimes impossible to appear and so he said, “ Fast when you see the new moon and break your fast when you also see the new moon, but if it is cloudy, complete the month of Shaban to thirty”. The Holy Qur’an said, “fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may attain piety”.
