New police chief, men arrest 2 cops carrying unlicensed guns Print

Policemen led by newly assumed OIC City Police Director Sr. Supt. JoseChiquito Malayo arrested two police escorts of a municipal mayor of Basilan for possession of unlicensed gun along Veterans Avenue last Friday night.

Malayo identified those arrested as PO2 Nasser Jul-Asri y Sarahan and PO1 Darwin Darong y Asanji of the Basilan Police Provincial Office and detailed as security escorts of Mayor Hadji Jamar Mansul of Hadji Mutamad Municipality.

A police report disclosed that men of the Patrol Section led by Dr. Supt. Malayo were conducting roving patrol along P Lorenzo St. when they spotted a Starex van with plate number JCA 845 with some road violations.

However, the van sped towards Veterans Avenue when the passengers aboard sensed the presence of the police. At this point, Malayo and his men gave chaseupto Veterans Avenue where they cornered the suspicious vehicle.

When the policemen checked the passengers aboard, they found out aboard were Mansul with his two police escorts and were heavily armed. When checked, Malayo and his men recovered an M16 rifle and a .45 caliber pistol from the possession of Jul-Asri and another M16 rifle with grenade launcher from the possession of Darong.

When interrogated, the two policemen could not produce papers allowing them to possess and carry firearms in the city.

Jul-Asri and Darong were detained at the central police station while the confiscated firearms were forwarded to the 9th PNP Crime Laboratory for ballistic examinations.
