There is no vessel now making direct trips from Zamboanga City to General Santos City and Davao City.

Maritime Industry Authority  (MARINA) Region 12 Director Bashirudin Adil said that for almost two years now, no single commercial vessel — both for passengers and cargoes — is serving the route from Zamboanga City to General Santos and Davao and vice versa.

“Usually if I go home to Zamboanga City,  I take the 2GO commercial vessel that serves the sealanes of Davao City to Gen. Santos City, Zamboanga City and then to Manila. But now it is no longer in existence because airline fares are now very affordable for passengers like that of Cebu Pacific and PAL Express,” Adil said.

General Santos City port serves only cargo vessels from Manila as well as foreign cargo boats importing and exporting goods from Gen. Santos City to world market. Another private port is also loading cargoes from Dole Philippines that export fresh pineapples and canned fruits and canned pineapples.

Cargoes exported to foreigrn countries from Gen. Santos City include cavendish banana ( green variety) and livestdocks, Corns feeds and agriculture products are shipped to Manila and Cebu.

Meanwhile, Adil disclosed that his office collected P4 million in revenues from shipping lines who renewed their boat and vessel registration for the year 2012.

His office also gives examinations for Seaman’s Book, Boat Captain, Marine Mechanics Licensures, Marines Computer and other  Marine Science Cources. Applicants no longer to go to Manila to take such  examinations which are scheduled every last Wednesday of the month. — Allen Abastillas
