Newly-appointed chairperson and administrator of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority Christopher Lawrence Arnuco yesterday convened the board with a firm resolve to bring in innovative solutions and set the stage for a more conducive business environment for the ecozone.

Highlight of the meeting was the oath taking of ex-officio members—Mayor Beng Climaco, District I Representative Celso Lobregat and City Councilor Benjamin Guingona IV.

The three elected officials join in other members—Rafael Evangelista, Edgar Lim and Jose Suan.

Arnuco, took over the unexpired 3-year term of Georgina Yu, who resigned from her post due to health reasons. He was appointed by President Aquino to the post middle of this month and will remain in his post until 2016.

With his splendid educational qualifications and background and spectacular accomplishments as head of various agencies specifically as head of National Youth Commission, Arnuco comes down in the history of the Ecozone as the facility’s youngest chairman and administrator at the age of 33.

Mayor Beng Climaco thanked former Chair Yu for her efforts in steering the ecozone for several years and congratulated Arnuco for his appointment stressing that the young leader brings in vibrancy and zest to the ecozone.

Items discussed during the meeting yesterday included authorization for the disbursement of expenditures, streamlining mechanisms and preparation for the 2014 budget which will be a subject of hearings in Congress next week.

“El di aton advise and our expectation is for the Zambo Ecozone to be economically viable,” the mayor stressed.

Arnuco expressed his gratitude to President Aquino for giving him the confidence to serve as the chairperson and administrator of the Zambo Ecozone.

“Aware of the limited time to serve, I trust that together, we will set the stage for a more conducive business environment for Zamboanga Economic Zone and Freeport Authority. I look forward to working in close collaboration with PNoy’s Team headed by Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco and other agencies of the government and the private sector,” Arnuco emphasized.

Early this week, he met with the employees of the Ecozone where he laid down his administration policies and agenda. “Thanks to Zamboanga Ecozone employees for enthusiastically accepting new ideas. I am so happy to see them excited and willing to participate in innovative solutions! What a great start! Team Zamboanga Ecozone, let us keep the momentum.”

The Zambo ecozone was created through Republic Act 7903 authored by the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat when she was the Representative of the City’s lone district. It is a government entity with a mission of becoming the hub for economic activities and a springboard for the promotion of trade, investment and tourism in the city and the region thus bringing about socio-economic upliftment. —Sheila Covarrubias
