Two more laurels had been added to the city’s cap as two members of Zamboanga City-based farmer groups emerged victorious in a recently-concluded regional cooking competition.

Loisa Rose delos Reyes represented the city at the Regional Cooking Contest on Brown Rice and Other Staples held on July 23 in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Her entry, “Arroz ala Rica” – a mixture of brown rice, cassava, carrots, monggo and camote earned praises from the judges and audience.

A member of the Young Farmers Club of Mampang, delos Reyes is a 3rd year student taking up Bachelor of Science in Education major in English at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.

It can be recalled that delos Reyes produced Sarsa de Arroz, the winning entry to the Regional Family Farm Forum – Rice Development category held in Pagadian City last month.

In the white rice with vegetable category, Curuan 4-H Club member Rowel Lumangtad placed third among participants from the region.

Delos Reyes and Lumangtad each received certificates of recognition and cash prizes of P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.

The regional cooking contest is part of the celebration of the National Year of Rice. It was held concurrently all around the country. The schedule for the national competition has yet to be finalized. — Claudine Uniana
