District 1 Congressman Celso Lobregat motored to barangay Limpapa yesterday to personally express condolences and offer help to the family of the two children who were killed in a landslide incident in sitio Cumati.

Lobregat met with Carmelita Caluuyan, mother of Agustin, 15 years old and Ayen, 6 years old who were both buried alive under rocks and soil shortly after 6am yesterday morning.

The Caluuyan’s residence was one of the 3 houses that were buried in a landslide after continuous rains hit the city whole day of Friday.

Lobregat coordinated with Mayor Beng Climaco, who was also in the area, for other forms of assistance and interventions.

He likewise sought the help of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional director Zenaida Arevalo, who promised to immediately send her social workers to coordinate with the landslide victims. The Department of Public Works and Highways-District Office was also sought to bring in heavy equipment for the clearing of the area.

The congressman observed that the area where the affected families reside is hazard prone as it is situated in right in front of a mountain. He said measures should be done to have the residents move to a safer area.

The way he assessed it, Lobregat said, landslide will continue if the rains will not stop. “There are other remaining houses in the area which is considered a danger zone. The residents should be asked to look for safer grounds.”

The Limpapa barangay chairman said the residents have been advised of the possible risks in staying in the area earlier on, the solon added. — Rey Carbonel
