Thirty-two houses were razed in a fire that broke out in Barangay Matibay, Lamitan City, Basilan Saturday night.

FO3 Antonio Paculdo, investigador of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Lamitan, disclosed that they received a fire call around 9 p.m. and immediately responded, but the blaze had already spread.

Paculdo said considering that they have only one fire truck, fire fighters were not able to contain the flames which quickly spread.

The Lamitan BFP firemen had to ask Volunteers of the United Evangelical Church Firefighters Group based in Isabela  City to help them battle the blaze.

The fire was put under control after an hour of fire fighting.

Initial investigation disclosed that the fire that broke out when Lamitan was experiencing power outage was sparked by an unattended kerosene lamp at the house of Lukaisa Ismael

The flames were spread wide and quick by strong winds.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Some 45 families were affected by the calamity.

BFP Lamitan estimated the damage at P2 million.

Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay immediately extended assistance to the affected families, most of whom are now temporarily sheltered at the Datu Dizal Cultural Center. — Richard Falcatan
